School Brochure

Columbia has two points of entry for the full-time MBA program: the August entry is for CBS’s traditional 2 year MBA program with a comprehensive core during the first year, a summer internship opportunity, and a wide range of electives during the second year of study.

The January entry (J-term) is for CBS’s 16 month MBA program with the same core structure and elective options as the August entry, but with no formal summer internship. J-term is a wonderful option for those working in family business, budding entrepreneurs, or for those students looking to make smaller changes in their career.

At Columbia Business School you will be able to take advantage of all New York City has to offer, while immersing yourself in a warm and supportive community of students, faculty, and staff who are all working to help you reach your goals. At CBS you will find a world of opportunities from in-semester internships and weekday informational chats with alumni, to leadership positions in clubs and perspective-changing travel programs.

20 months (August entry, includes a summer off for internships)

16 months (January entry, students take core and elective courses over the summer.)

08:30:45 pm
User avatar Columbia Hi @itairieger CBS students have very diverse backgrounds (opera singers, professional athletes, entrepreneurs, government experience, consulting, banking, media, non-profit, marketing, etc.) across a multitude of industries. What is important to us is why an MBA is the logical next step for you in your career progression (even if that is because you are hoping to pivot to something new). You will see from our profile that students range in age from 22-40. https://academics.business.columbia.edu/mba/admissions/class-profile

User avatar Columbia Hi @Emma our students come for in-person classes at our Manhattanville campus, and often spend time in the study spaces before and after class. They also often stay for various activities on campus, such as guest speaker events, conferences, student organization meetings, and more. Then, they have the entire city to explore!

User avatar itairieger Hi @Columbia, I was wondering how important it is to the school to have students from different professional and academic backgrounds? I am currently on the 4th year of a PhD program in neurobiology, and want to transition from academia to a managerial position in bio-tech, do you think CBS program would be a good fit for me? also, I am 32 years old, do you take age into considerations when evaluating applications? is there an age limit? Thank you

08:26:59 pm
User avatar Columbia Thanks for the question @Ofir. Courses at Columbia Business School are taught both by the School’s 150 full-time faculty members — thought leaders whose research is transforming the way business is conducted across the world — and by more than 100 adjuncts — practitioners from a wealth of industries who, because of the School’s symbiotic relationship with New York, can take the subway uptown to teach a class on their lunch break. It is a unique opportunity to have access to both of these categories of folks.

User avatar Emma How is a day at CBS campus?
06-30-2024
08:25:36 pm
User avatar Columbia Thanks for joining @Guy Adiry . Most students live off-campus in the New York City area. However, admitted students may apply for on-campus graduate student housing but the availability is limited so CBS gives priority to new, incoming students coming from the furthest distances first.

User avatar Columbia Hi @Yaakov, This is a common experience for our students. In some cases, this experience is an important driver in your future career goals in which case you might elaborate upon it in your Essay #1. However, you are welcome to use the optional essay to expand upon this experience and you can also list it on your CV so we see immediately why there might be a gap in your employment.

User avatar Columbia Hi @Noam Finestone  thanks for your great questions! You are right that the in-semester internship opportunities are one of the things that sets CBS apart from other institutions. Those opportunities are as diverse as our students and their interests. Some students choose to do several of them during their time at CBS. We are also very committed to Social Impact and many of our initiatives in that area are led by our Tamer Institute https://business.columbia.edu/socialenterprise

The algorithm is specifically designed to allow students to rank electives so that they can secure spots in their most preferred courses. Hi Spira! There is no minimum score to apply. 06-30-2024
08:06:15 pm
User avatar Columbia Hi @Rotem Eilat- 1. Your application and your brother's applications will be considered separately and on their own merits. However, we look positively on joint applications because it shows a strong interest in CBS and provides us with a sense of who will support you throughout your program. 2. We have a wide variety of supports for students both academically, in student life and in career programming. I would recommend reviewing the following and reaching out to ODS and academic support after you are admitted to begin planning your program. https://academics.gsb.columbia.edu/mba/academics/academic-support 3. The Univesity's top priority is the safety of our community. Columbia is committed to academic freedom and to the opportunity for students and faculty to engage in political expression—within established rules and with respect for the safety of all.

User avatar Noam Finestone Hi Josie, Clare and Tricia, I have reviewed Columbia's website and brochure and have a few questions: 1. Coming from a fintech background, I noticed that Columbia offers a specialization in fintech. Could you elaborate more on what this entails, including post-MBA career placement? 2. One of the main reasons Columbia interests me is the in-semester internship and the opportunity to learn from industry leaders. What types of roles are typically available for these internships? 3. As making a social impact is highly important to me, I would like to know what kind of on-campus activities you have that support this goal. 4. I would appreciate learning more about the percentage of women and parents in your full two-year programs. Thank you!

That said, they have the option to tailor their electives to their professional interests. Please feel welcome to review our course catalog to get a sense of elective options: https://courses.business.columbia.edu/ 2. That depends on the admission round which you would apply to. Please take a look at timelines here: https://academics.business.columbia.edu/mba/admissions/options-deadlines 3. We require a test score and it can be the GMAT, GMAT Focus Edition, GRE, or Executive Assessment. There is no preference given between these standardized tests 4. All August MBA applicants are automatically considered for merit fellowships. We also have a need-based scholarship application that is made available during the admissions process.

User avatar Columbia Hello @Jaaber "Jay" Saidi. What a great question and there are so many answers. I think sometimes folks think they know about CBS strengths and fail to learn about all the areas where we have remarkable resources and opportunities (i.e. Real Estate, Climate, Social Impact, Entrepreneurial ventures, etc.). Also, we are very innovative and on the cutting edge of curricular innovation to ensure that candidates will be ready to lead in a changing economy.

User avatar Columbia Hi @Rosenberg Eliyahu many students use their MBA to pivot into their next career and the full-time internship during the summer often serves as a launchpad to do so. Please make sure your essays clearly articulate your post-MBA short and long term goals and how you plan to use the resources available at CBS to help achieve this desired transition.

User avatar Rotem Eilat Hello Columbia team, thank you for your time. I would like to ask a few questions about the MBA program: Firstly, if both my brother and I enroll, will our registrations be linked or considered jointly in any way? Secondly, what support does the program offer for individuals with ADHD to help them succeed in tests and coursework? Lastly, how are Israeli-related topics perceived and discussed on campus, particularly within the MBA faculty? thanks!

User avatar Eran Hi! first of all thank you for hosting us in this event. I would like to ask a few questions; 1. Do you have a specific MBA's programs in business administration (according to a certain specialization)? If so - does it exist in the field of hospitality and tourism/in the field of marketing/in other fields? 2. In addition, how long does the whole process take from the moment of selection to the moment of admission to the academic institution? 3. Is a GMAT test required to be admitted to your degree? 4. In addition, are there certain scholarships?

User avatar Columbia Hi @Tamar- While partners are not able to take classes, they are an important part of our community. I would encourage you to review the following for more information: https://students.business.columbia.edu/office-of-student-affairs/cbs-partners-families In addition, NYC is a great place for partners because there is so much for them to do outside of CBS. Partners often go along on trips etc. and become close with the students in our MBA cohort.
